The Eurecat Foundation, together with the collaboration of the Port Authority of Tarragona, has carried out the final demonstration of the pilot of the “NASAPP. Multi-layer data platform for the management and anticipation of environmental pollution episodes.” The project is part of the Ports 4.0 program, an initiative of Puertos del Estado.

The objective of the project is to improve air quality in port environments by detecting, predicting and managing odor pollution episodes, using advanced Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and citizen science technologies.

It is a multi-layer SaaS platform that allows real-time odor monitoring through citizen participation and advanced measurement techniques. It uses field olfactometry, pollutant dispersion models and human sensors to estimate the concentration and dispersion of odors. In addition, it incorporates back tracking algorithms to identify the origin of odor episodes.

The platform is presented as a mobile app and a web manager, integrating the olfactory perception of citizens as an environmental early warning system, overcoming the limitations of traditional equipment.

The demonstration was held in the building of the Port Authority of Tarragona, where all the work done for the development of the application was demonstrated, the use of the NASAPP mobile and web application was shown. Real cases of odorous episodes were shown, and how the platform allows:

  • Detect in real time the appearance of unpleasant odors.
  • Identify the origin using backtracking algorithms.
  • Recommend to industries the best time to operate, minimizing environmental impact.
  • Generate automatic reports (with 3 clicks, in 30 seconds) for administrations and companies.
  • Continuous training through machine learning

The results obtained have been highly positive, consolidating NASAPP as an innovative, scalable and high-impact solution for environmental management in ports and industrial areas. The platform is positioned as a key tool to advance towards the concept of Green Port, aligned with the objectives of sustainability and digitization of the Spanish port system.
