With the publication of the final resolution for the Ideas modality, we already know the initiatives that will receive the support of the Ports 4.0 fund in its first call. These selected ideas stand out for their innovative potential to transform the port-logistics sector.

INTRAPRENEURSHIP

IDEA 9: WORLD/FRIENDLY PORT

WFriendly/Port seeks to develop a new port model that will serve as a common framework to unify criteria and analyze its development at a global level, defining a WFriendly/Port index automatically through algorithms that indicate the level of compliance with the model in the different ports.

The aim is to provide linked data and information to accelerate compliance with the objectives of sustainable development and the implementation of the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution in ports, developing a web application for its dissemination and commercialization. All this using technologies such as IoT, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to be able to apply the model and the WFriendly index on a large scale, and thus be able to analyze and process large volumes of information from different origins.

IDEA 13: KEEP IT MOVING

KIM (Keep It Moving) is a project that seeks to reduce the costs of repositioning empty containers. These costs, in addition to being monetary, are environmental. The objective is to create a marketplace-type platform that unifies all the companies involved in the business in the same place.

This platform will not only be for the exchange of equipment, but will also seek to improve the efficiency of these companies by offering an updated analysis of their movements through the use of big data, as well as allowing the reduction of bureaucratic processes between companies and increasing the degree of trust and security between them, since smart contracts (blockchain) would be used for the signing of exchanges with multiple conditions.

IDEA 42: OPEN INFO API FOR PORTS

The objective of Open Info API for ports is to offer citizens, agents and port users an open API that facilitates real-time access to information from other port APIs or third parties, and that can also be integrated by applications developed by third parties.

IDEA 61: SPOTPORT

SpotPort is an idea of a commercial logistic-port services platform model (maritime intermodal marketplace) for SMEs, in the spot market niche of con-ro and ro-ro (full and fragmented) general cargo under the Short Sea Shipping and regular lines modality, where customers and their goods are put in contact with shipping companies and road hauliers that perform the door-to-door modality (door-to-door agents).

The customer has the facility to search, compare and make the booking, taking their goods (complete or fragmented) by sea, door to door, through the various existing routes by different ports and shipping companies.

IDEA142: ALL4MARITIME

All4Maritime (All4M) is conceived as a Marketplace-type technological platform that will facilitate the relationship between all the agents involved in the arrival and stay of ships in the different ports, as well as the commercialization of services to the ship. This marketplace will allow coordination between the parties, helping the user experience and making the process more efficient through the application of data analytics and AI.

All4M can be visualized as the “Advanced Digital Consignee” that will allow real-time connection to all the agents involved, facilitating contact and knowledge of supply and demand between suppliers and customers, providing agility to negotiations. All4M will also help to increase the number of service providers to vessels.

General ideas

IDEA 2: SHELLOCK

Shellock is a real-time tracking service for cargo containers. It uses a web platform for computers and mobile app, along with a proprietary IoT device that is a smart seal that replaces the traditional seal and is used to secure the container door.

This reusable device is responsible for securing the container door and capturing data and sending it to the platform, without the need to be connected to power sources. It provides updated arrival at destination and a system of real-time alerts and notifications such as incidents, impacts and theft.

IDEA 7: PV-BOS PORTS

Development of a maritime drone (high payload, equipped with a novel energy system, consisting of solar panels as an energy source, whose surplus feeds a system for the production of green hydrogen from the electrolysis of water to be compressed, stored and subsequently used. The system is complemented by a closed circuit of pure water (necessary for the production of green hydrogen) by using the water resulting from the process of energy generation by means of hydrogen cells, thus avoiding the need for a system to distill sea water.

The configuration of the device will be based on the structure of a catamaran, being able to use the USV hull itself as a hydrogen tank. In this way, and by correctly sizing the solar panels, the power of the fuel cell and the storage capacity, unlimited autonomy can be achieved.

IDEA 8: MADEPORT

MADEPORT is an international B2B marketplace with the objective of digitalizing and automating exports and imports in shipping and port logistics within the timber sector. It is a platform that will connect agents and traders involved in the import of wood with large consumers such as wood warehouses, industrial carpentry, etc.. The proposed marketplace is based on AI technologies to
automate the choice of suppliers, interpreting the processing of requests and assisted decision making to buyers. The objectives are to streamline the stocking, optimize the choice of suppliers and streamline the relationship between the various actors in the process.

IDEA 10: SUPRASHORE

Study of the suitability of ultra-compact links for the efficient transmission of high power between ships and
electrical connections in ports that contribute to flexibility in energy management The links are based on superconducting technology in its different aspects of low and high temperature.

This technology will allow a loss-free distribution, a reduction of civil works and associated electrical equipment, will be
adapted to the storage and subsequent distribution of energy, in addition to allowing the transmission of chemical and electrical energy through the cooling system of the superconductor.

IDEA 16: PORTPOS

It is a multi-sensor positioning system for vessels based on GNSS technologies (GPS+ IMU (inertial sensors) and UWB (broadband radio frequency). The aim is to achieve a product that enables a series of VTS Vessel Trafic Systems services such as active DAS systems for berthing assistance or traffic control, and the establishment of routes for the entry and exit of vessels in restricted areas such as ports, which will improve the safety and efficiency of port operations.

The positioning system to be installed on board will include the triple sensor system and, together with GALILEO’s high precision service, will allow an accuracy to cm or mm level.

IDEA 20: BATICOL

Design of a low cost and easily replicable hardware device of bathymetric units. The device is equipped with different sensors (echo sounder, GPS and inertial sensors) interconnected among them, which will be installed in different vessels with frequent use in the port area (pilot boats, tugboats, fishing boats, sport boats, etc.).

The data obtained will be stored in the cloud and, thanks to its subsequent computation, will generate a collaborative, real-time, high-resolution and temporal bathymetric map of the main traffic routes.

IDEA 2.20: IZEEM PORT

Multipurpose marine foundation system for floating platforms, adaptable to both low and high depths, as well as to platforms of different sizes. Its construction is proposed in a fast way by means of additive technology or afloat. This foundation will serve as a base or platform on which to place the required systems, whether power generation prototypes, laboratories or signaling buoys or other aids to navigation in a fast and economical way, avoiding the use of specialized vessels. Therefore, it is a towable or self-transportable and self-installable system with a single campaign, without work afloat, having all the installation elements, including the connection systems between the afloat and anchored parts, already integrated in the product in the manufacturing process, which avoids the use of specialized vessels and, therefore, reduces costs and installation times.

IDEA 2.21: APOLLO

Development of a system composed of modular devices that allows the generation of photovoltaic solar energy and its use for both self-consumption and storage in maritime environments. It can be used both in container ships and in port terminals that house containerized cargo traffic. The set of elements used simultaneously can be managed and monitored from a control and supervision application. The proposed device is housed in a sea container that can be either twenty feet or forty feet. Being a container, it will be stowed like any other container in the location to be determined, which may be the upper level of the cargo deck of a container ship or the upper location of a container tower located in a port terminal.

IDEA 22: VIRTUAL.IA PORTS

Development of an immersive and personalized training tool through the integration of two digital technologies: virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The tool adapts according to the needs, competencies and skills of the learner in an unattended way thanks to AI, allowing trainers to focus their efforts on high value-added tasks such as reinforcement of soft skills and coaching.

The proposal will detect patterns of movement and behavior of the different users throughout the training process, identifying users according to the achievement of the tasks and the reason for their success versus those who fail to achieve the objectives set.

IDEA 23: SERVIDRONE

The idea is based on the Drone as a Service DaaS concept by fully automating the operation of ground vehicles to perform services that complement those now performed manually in the field of security, safety, environmental monitoring and logistics. The development and integration of several technologies is proposed. A land rover drone as an autonomous mobile platform with integrated sensors, communicated with a central control software, data analysis and interconnection with other port services.

This platform consisting of hardware and software components can be implemented in a fully modular way and can be scaled to other types of autonomous vehicles on the water surface.

IDEA 32: SMARTCALL

Intelligent platform that provides information on vessel calls at different ports, aggregating diverse information sources in real time from the DUE as AIS information and providing added value to the agents involved in the logistics chain. The platform offers relevant data, both from the previous voyage and the calls it makes until its completion, with the aim of improving the decision-making processes of all the companies involved.

The information sources will provide various customized information services for customers through two distinct lines of information, dashboards and data services.

IDEA 40: INTRUSION CONTROL

Security system for port access control and real-time tracking of movements inside the port. The system is integrated by 4 subsystems for intrusion detection in the port logistics area, access control and geolocation of authorized individuals, artificial vision platform, antenna array and artificial intelligence platform with Machine Learning that will receive data from all previous subsystems, combining them and performing real-time calculations on them.

The system will be fed back and will increase its learning capacity with each information received, generating new
results that allow predicting movements and actions inside or outside the port area.

IDEA 43: COOLTAINERS

Cooltainers is a bitemperature refrigerated container system composed of a physical subsystem, a real-time temperature sensing and remote control subsystem and a geolocation subsystem which integrate different hardware and software technologies available in the market.

The aim of this project is to increase the average container load by allowing goods with different degrees of refrigeration to be transported simultaneously, thus reducing logistics and environmental costs.

IDEA 51: 3D-PNS (Printing Nautic Services)

Creation of a production service of new and spare parts for the nautical and recreational sector. It is an eco, km 0 and agile system, which uses recycled plastics from the sea, additive production technology and 3D printing in a location located in the same port.

Advanced technology will be used to create filaments as raw material from marine and port waste. The Idea promotes the circular economy and the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with the logistics of the supply chain of this type of parts thanks to on-site and on-demand production.

IDEA 54: NEREIDS. MARINE REGENERATION

Service for the regeneration of marine biodiversity in commercial ports and marinas through artificial reefs made with 3-D printing. The idea includes an experimental and observational study in the port of the Balearic Islands.
The core of the project focuses on the experimental design of a modular artificial reef system using 3D additive printing technology and different recycled materials with low carbon footprint as facilitating structures for the planting of oceanic posidonia in harbors.

All this allows for an improvement in the port waters, reducing pollution and increasing marine biodiversity. The project includes the underwater installation of the reef and planting with endemic aquatic plant species and, in particular, Posidonia Oceanica.

IDEA 57: BOXPROPHET

It is a software that allows the estimation of container traffic demand in several time horizons and different geographical areas. The main module of the software presents traffic forecasts on an annual and quarterly basis. If customers have historical data, it is possible to increase the frequency of the
results by incorporating additional databases to the system to obtain monthly estimates.

The tool uses a combination of predictive models depending on the time horizon analyzed, applying data science techniques, machine learning and advanced econometrics, including the incorporation of the impact of exogenous variable scenarios such as Brexit, Covid 19 or trends in supply chain near offshoring.

IDEA 62: TRUSTED

This is an interoperability platform between private agents and administrations that are part of the port community with the aim of consolidating a unified repository of information and documentation for different port processes (port call requests, dangerous goods files, relations with freight insurance companies, etc.). The objective is to avoid requesting the same documentation to all agents at
each vessel call.

For the development of the platform, blockchain technology is used to ensure the immutability, confidentiality and integrity of the information, having information of decentralized origin and being able to add a layer of smart contracts.

IDEA 71: RO-RO MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

We propose a solution for the management of RO RO storage areas based on the integration of multiple available data sources obtained from port logistics operations. This solution is based on the combination of data from the positioning of units in the yard (VINs lists and data sources such as SGAs or ERPs, video images and sensors in the yard and fleet vehicles, analyzed and processed in an intelligence layer to be made available to end users in order to improve yard management and ro-ro operations, reduce costs, increase efficiency,
reduce carbon footprint and avoid accidents.

IDEA 82: G-VOLT

A system to remove barriers to entry into Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for small and medium-sized energy intensive companies, allowing them to benefit from cheaper and greener energy, while allowing renewable developers and financiers to enter into better structured, stable and reliable PPAs.

The system has an optimized demand aggregator marketplace structure, allowing, based on the demand profile and a supply proposal, renewable energy suppliers to offer a PPA and investors to offer financing for the development of the necessary project, also constituting a virtual financial platform. The tool will allow demand forecasting through AI, the correct measurement of consumption, the monitoring of all contracts, as well as all associated commercial and financial transactions through Blockchain technology.

IDEA 86: NUAVIS

Application of artificial vision and machine learning technology to the monitoring and analysis of elements of interest in the port environment to cover needs contrasted with reference entities in the sector, avoiding the limitations of current RFID technologies, without the need for dedicated hardware (cameras).

The idea is to improve the base technology already developed, adapting it for its correct operation in open environments and reinforced to show a robust behavior in aggressive contexts and changing weather conditions. On this basis, different services can be built according to the needs of each area of port logistics activity, being able to simultaneously monitor an unlimited number of elements and with the desired granularity

IDEA 91: SUMBA

Subma proposes the development of an autonomous vehicle (AUV) for ship hull cleaning with simultaneous collection of biofouling including the possibility of introducing new subsystems to improve the maintenance capability of marine structures (visual inspection, mapping capability, etc).

To this end, it is proposed to adapt and develop manual technologies already existing on the market and, in particular, to use the TRITON machine of the TRIDENT company, which is part of the group applying for aid.

IDEA 92: THERMOSENTINEL

The idea proposes to carry out network deployments of thermographic nodes, which are capable of acquiring
thermal images and transmitting them to a cloud platform through a wireless communication interface. The model of this initiative is not based on the sale of projects that revolve around thermal camera applications, but rather
proposes to develop agnostic networks under an IaaS business model, i.e., independent of the application, which acts as an attractor pole for companies specialized in the processing of thermal signals, reducing the costs associated with individual implementations.

The fundamental block of the system is the thermographic node, which is composed of a thermal camera, an embedded control system and a communications interface.

IDEA 95: STOCHASTIC MODEL FOR REAL-TIME PLANNING OF PORT PILOTAGE SERVICES

Application of stochastic programming techniques for the automatic planning of pilotage service tasks, taking into consideration the high incidence of variables with a high degree of uncertainty in ports, such as climatic or operational variables.

The proposed idea would allow an automatic preliminary assignment of tasks in the short term and that the system would be
dynamically fed back with new information in real time obtained from monitoring systems, making the appropriate modifications to provide a better service with the update of uncertainty, leading in real time to new schedules (e.g. waiting times) that improve the quality of service indexes.

IDEA 108: TREATMENT OF CONTAMINATED WATER

Establishment of a treatment plant for all types of sewage from ships. The service consists of the reception on land of such contaminated water to be treated in a single, compact, universal plant that operates by means of innovative gravity technology instead of others that require pumping, impulsion or high pressure, which entails lower energy needs that can be covered with renewable energy through the installation of photovoltaic panels.

IDEA 109: PILOTAGE ASSISTANCE SYSTEM

Development of a system based on radar technology to assist pilots during ship docking and undocking maneuvers. The system to be developed will have at least one mobile device that will be positioned on the dock, which will be equipped with the latest generation radar technology to measure and transmit to a device equipped with a screen that the pilot or the ship’s captain will carry on board and where he will be able to visualize in real time the relative position between ship and dock in a reliable and accurate way.

This device will considerably facilitate the maneuver, regardless of the weather conditions that occur
during the maneuver.

IDEA 113: ELECTRIC NILM

Intelligent monitoring tool for the energy consumption of existing port facilities (cranes, conveyor belts, air conditioning, etc.) using non-intrusive high-frequency technology (NILM) to identify the active elements, as well as their specific consumption signature.

This monitoring should be accompanied by additional process elements (Machine Learning Deep Learning Association Rules) that facilitate its interpretation by the different stakeholders. The purpose of the idea is not only to improve awareness in terms of energy consumption and its correction if necessary, but also to allow a better analysis of its consistency that will allow applications in other fields such as predictive maintenance of facilities or security.

IDEA 115: CRUISETRACK

Development of a comprehensive platform that provides services to cruise ship passengers, encompassing all the actors participating in the ecosystem that is formed in the port destination environment (cruise companies, cruise passengers, businesses present in the destination and the entities managing the tourist destination).

To this end, the central element is the development of a wearable device (initially in bracelet format) with LTE, GPS and Bluetooth connection, through which cruise passengers can immediately consult tourist and commercial information free of charge in real time on their mobile devices, as well as receive alerts and other functionalities. This data will be used to obtain behavioral patterns of cruise passengers and improve the information to be displayed.

IDEA 117: PIPER

Development of a fast, inexpensive, non-invasive and automatic system for the detection of illicit substances in passengers,
port operators and crew, as well as in their luggage and belongings, using vapor detection techniques.
Illicit substances include drugs, explosives and other hazardous substances such as chemical agents and toxic gases.

The inspection is based on the non-intrusive aspiration of the air surrounding the object/person to be scanned and the real-time analysis of that air sample that allows detection of trace concentrations of illicit substances in seconds. The designed scanner is very versatile and can be installed at any point of the port facilities for the control of regular line passengers or cruise passengers.

IDEA 124: BLUE MARITIME SIGNALS

Design of a wave power generation system for its integration as a power supply system in maritime beaconing signals. Specifically, the part of the wave power capture energies called “Power Take Off” (PTO) will be developed.

Wave energy converters capture wave energy, convert it into mechanical energy and then into electrical energy, allowing both direct power supply to the lantern and power supply to an auxiliary storage system in case of failure. It will also incorporate a monitoring system that will allow real-time control and recording of maritime signals.

IDEA 136: CICERO

Cicero is a system that accelerates the natural processes of pollutant removal, improving the quality of inland port waters without resorting to contaminated water pumping systems, which causes pollution to spread outward from the port.

The system will increase water circulation with the dual purpose of improving the contact of contaminants with natural removal factors (solar radiation and decomposer organisms) and increasing the area and volume of harbor water involved in the removal processes. These systems will use various techniques such as forced circulation with pumping systems and aeration of contaminant accumulation zones to produce degrees of agitation in the areas that need it most.
