The group of companies composed by OCEAN ECOSTRUCTURES S.L. and GPA-SEABOTS S.L., responsible for the “OASIS” project, subsidized by the Ports 4.0 Fund of Puertos del Estado, has carried out the final demonstration of the project that has been carried out both in the offices of OCEAN ECOSTRUCTURES and in the Port of Barcelona. The test was attended by the heads of Innovation of Puertos del Estado, the Port Authority of Barcelona and the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, along with those responsible for the project by each member of the group.
The objective of the project is to transform gray marine infrastructures into areas rich in biodiversity and at the same time allow their monitoring, visualization and inspection remotely and in real time in order to assess their impact in terms of biodiversity generation, CO₂ uptake, identification of invasive species and improvement of water quality.
To this end, the beneficiary group has developed a comprehensive multi-technology solution combining regenerative biodiversity technology and data collection technology through sensorized USVs as an IoT platform, cloud computing system and artificial intelligence for the generation of virtual sensors and 3D modeling that behave as Digital Twins.
During the execution of the project, the entities have completed the redesign and industrial optimization of the BBS structures, their manufacture and installation in the Ports of Barcelona and Palma, as well as the adaptation of a multi-robot monitoring system for the capture of images and multi-parametric data, the generation of 3D models of the structures and the estimation of biodiversity and CO₂ from images and environmental data.
In short, the beneficiary entities point out that the OASIS solution increases marine biodiversity, improves water quality and quantifies the carbon fixed in degraded port areas, making it possible to monitor and follow up on all the results obtained.
After the presentation on the characteristics and particularities of the project execution, a visit was made to the structure installed in the North Mouth of the Port of Barcelona, where the placement of several micro reefs was verified by means of an underwater robot and the procedure established for their monitoring was explained.
The solution is currently implemented in the market. To date, more than 500 units have been successfully installed in various sectors of activity, in addition to several ongoing projects, which demonstrates its degree of maturity and acceptance.
